Elementary students from across the MOBOCES region had an opportunity to join a live videoconference on Friday with nationally-known teacher, librarian and presenter John Schu.

Students, teachers and school librarians had an opportunity to talk with Schu about libraries, authors and developing a love for reading. He also shared some of his favorite books for grades 3-6 and gave away many of those titles to teachers and librarians participating in the event.

“I hope everyone got a book – that’s always my goal,” he said.

schuSchu read passages from different books and invited his colleague, author Lauren Castillo, to read a few pages from her book, “Our Friend Hedgehog” and then lead a short demonstration of how to draw her hedgehog character.

Utilizing both a live Zoom call and a simultaneous YouTube livestream, SLS was able to deliver “A Virtual Reading Celebration” to several hundred students and staff in the region. Participating districts included Camden, Canastota, Hamilton, Madison, Morrisville, MOBOCES, Otselic Valley, Rome and Stockbridge Valley.

The Reading Celebration was one of two regional virtual events the MOBOCES School Library System held in April for National School Library Month. On April 14, SLS hosted a professional development workshop for school librarians during which Schu shared some of the best new books for K-6 and talked about the power of libraries.
