Virtual Career Fair

CTE Holds Virtual Career Fair
Posted on 04/13/2021

High school seniors in Career and Technical Education programs at MOBOCES had an opportunity over the past month to hear directly from local businesses leaders during our Virtual Career Fair.

Work Based Learning Coordinator Paula Orr met individually with nearly two dozen representatives of local businesses from a variety of career fields and recorded brief interviews with them. Those interviews were added to a Google Classroom along with activities and resources that students could use to learn more about various companies and industries.

Teachers used the videos and materials in the Google Classroom over the past several weeks to help students explore career pathways and post-secondary options.

CTE held its first Career Fair two years ago as a way to more directly connect graduating seniors with trade and professional skills to businesses and organizations in the region looking to expand their workforce. More than 30 area businesses, agencies, colleges and military branches sent representatives to campus to discuss their industries, upcoming openings, post-secondary options and career preparation strategies.

The 2020 fair was cancelled, but CTE leaders wanted to ensure that 2021 graduates had as many opportunities as possible to explore different career paths, even if they occurred virtually.

This year’s virtual format allowed sophomores and juniors to participate as well, and it allowed teachers more flexibility to use the materials at multiple times and when it fit in best with their coursework.

Our Virtual Career Fair participants are a small sampling of the 275 local businesses, schools, colleges, government agencies and community organizations that offer MOBOCES students a variety of work-based learning experiences, including internships, job shadows and site visits.
