Therapy Dog Reading Program

June 11, 2024, marked the final therapy dog reading session of the school year, where students from MOBOCES elementary and secondary classes bid farewell to their beloved four-legged friend before summer break. Chimay is a certified therapy dog residing in Oriskany with her owner, Ann McGee-Martel. During these sessions, students would select a book and read aloud to Chimay for five minutes, honing their reading and communication skills.

This opportunity was made possible by Teacher Ms. Wickman and Mrs. Riley, who coordinated with the service dog's handler. “The kids love reading to Chimay, and it practices their reading skills,” said teaching assistant Kristi Riley.

To mark today’s final gathering, students and staff brought cards, flowers, and toys as tokens of appreciation for Ann and Chimay’s invaluable support this semester. “We look forward to Chimay and Ann returning with us next year,” said Wickman.
