All of our Literacy Classes are offered at No Cost to the Student!
Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency classes offer adults the opportunity to work with a qualified instructor to improve math, reading, and writing skills. These classes help adults without a high school diploma prepare for the GED test. We offer classes at numerous locations in the Utica-Rome-Oneida area. Morning, afternoon, and evening classes help make classes available to anybody who is interested.
Once you enroll, you are assessed to determine your strengths and weaknesses. Your instructor will then use appropriate resources to help you master the literacy and numeracy skills necessary for success. Regular assessments will then help us determine what you have mastered, and what you still need to work on. All materials are provided at no cost to you. For the techies out there, our sites are also equipped with computer labs and web-based programs geared towards GED success.
Adult Basic Education (ABE): Are you out of practice with your grammar, mechanics, and usage skills? Has it been a while since you did long division, fractions, or percent? Our adult basic education classes are geared with you in mind. Students who need to learn, or brush up on their foundation skills will work with our ABE instructor to master these skills.
High School Equivalency (HSE): Once you have become comfortable with your foundation skills, you are ready to start preparing for the GED test. Our HSE instructors will provide you with the resources and instruction necessary for GED success. We have print and online resources geared directly to the GED test. Let us share our GED expertise with you by signing up for classes today!

The GED test may not be the best option for every New York adult learner looking to earn their High School Equivalency Diploma. The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) is an alternative pathway to the New York State High School Equivalency Diploma. The NEDP allows eligible adults the opportunity to apply their life and employment experiences to complete program requirements. Qualifying candidates must meet weekly with an assessor who assigns tasks that you complete at home. Candidates who meet all of the requirements will earn a New York State High School Equivalency Diploma. NEDP is a computer-based program so you must have access to a computer as well as basic computer skills to complete the program. On average, the program takes approximately 8 months to complete.
The NEDP:

Did you pass one or more Regents Exam prior to leaving high school? New York State now offers GED credit for Regents exams you passed while in high school.
The following chart shows what GED credit you get for each Regents exam:
Regents Exam | GED Content Area Credit |
Any Math Regents |
Math |
Any Social Studies Regents | Social Studies |
Any Science Regents | Science |
Any ELA Regents | Reading & Writing |
If you have passing Regents Exam scores for each of the content areas, you will only have to take and pass 1 GED content test area.
How does it work?
Need help completing the Application R? Visit any of our ACCESS Sites and one of our case managers or other staff members will assist you in completing the Application R to ensure you get all the Regent's credit you have earned!
All passing Regents Exam scores count, it does not matter if you took the Regents Exam in 2016 or in 1962! If you passed it, it counts. If you have questions about the 4th Pathway, the Application R, or anything else GED related, call one of our ACCESS sites today!
As of January 01, 2022, New York State has begun the transition back to the GED Exam as the official assessment for earning your New York State HSE Diploma.
If you have passed parts of the GED between 2002 and 2013, or parts of the TASC between 2014 and 2021, but have not yet earned your HSE diploma, you will receive credit on the new GED for the portions you have previously passed.
BOCES is currently offering the GED exam at the Utica ACCESS Site (508 2nd St) and the Rome ACCESS Site (266 W. Dominick St).
You can register for a free GED account at GED.com. Once you register you will be able to access any age eligibility forms you may need, schedule your exam, and view your results almost immediately after completing the GED Exam.
While most New York State adults lacking a high school diploma are eligible to take the GED without doing any preparation, taking one of our free classes will greatly increase your likelihood of passing the GED exam. Our teachers work with resources designed specifically for GED success; and, when you are ready, you will have access to the HSE practice test that helps us determine your chances of success on the test.
