P2 Strengthens Social and Emotional Learning

The Positivity Project has become an integral part of the elementary program at MOBOCES, helping students develop character strengths and foster an inclusive school culture at both our North Broad Elementary and J.D. George Elementary campuses.
Our elementary classes began using The Positivity Project (P2), a national character development and school climate initiative, last year. Teachers and staff have already noticed a positive shift in student behavior, with children becoming more empathetic, self-aware, and respectful.
P2 provides teachers with a structured weekly curriculum that focuses on various character traits and essential life skills, empowering students to build positive relationships, self-awareness, and resilience.
By exploring traits such as kindness, perseverance, gratitude, and leadership, students gain a deeper understanding of their own strengths while also learning to appreciate and support those around them. This work has led to stronger student-teacher relationships, enhanced emotional and behavioral growth, and a greater sense of community and belonging.
"P2 has had a huge impact on our school culture,” North Broad Elementary Principal Chaz-Lit Droguett-Doyle said. “It brings the entire program, at both campuses, together with a common language that allows for our scholars to feel connected while building their skills to be the best version of themselves each and every day.”
To reinforce these lessons, school social workers visit classrooms each week to lead interactive activities, giving students a chance to engage with the material in meaningful ways.
Recently, students explored the theme of humility—learning that true confidence comes not from seeking recognition but from appreciating the strengths of others. Social workers read books on humility and led discussions about how this quality helps build stronger friendships and communities. Students had an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and learned how to practice humility in their daily lives.
"I like the P2 Project because we get to learn new things each week,” North Broad Elementary fifth grader Andy S. said. “We get to learn about kindness, ways to calm down, and think about others."
North Broad fourth grader Chase S. added, “One thing I like about the P2 project is getting to learn new things about ourselves."
Drouguett-Doyle said this work is embedded into the entire day, with the weekly trait discussed during the school-wide Morning Meetings, P2 classroom instruction, 1:1 counseling sessions, and weekly group therapy sessions.
“It has been such a great way to not only build on skills, but has fostered friendships, and has truly been the heart of our school culture," she said.
Beyond the classroom, the program has strengthened the school community, encouraging students to apply these values at home and in everyday interactions.
As the Positivity Project continues to evolve, both North Broad and J.D. George remain committed to helping students become kind, confident, and emotionally intelligent individuals. By fostering character development and social awareness, the school is preparing students for success—not just in academics, but in life.
