Cosmetology senior Heather Doroshenko, of Morrisville-Eaton, has received a 2020 Student Achievement Awards from the Oneida-Madison-Herkimer School Boards Institute (SBI).

Student Achievement Awards recognize students from Madison, Oneida and Herkimer counties who have faced personal and academic challenges but have continued to perform at a high level and remain committed to their goals. Heather was nominated by her Cosmetology teacher Casie Kolenda.

“Every day, Heather comes to class with a smile on her face and the willingness to learn and ‘take on the day,’” Kolenda wrote in her nomination. “Heather pushes herself to do the very best that she can invariably with a great attitude to follow.”

By the end of this school year, Heather plans to earn the 1,000 hours required for her to take the state Cosmetology licensing exam. After high school, she hopes to study business in college and would like to eventually own her own salon.

Outside of school, Heather is involved in many extracurriculars, including sports, Skills USA, junior class president, drama and the school musical.

The SBI awards are typically awarded in the spring to outstanding students, educators and programs in the region. The ceremony was not held in the spring due to the pandemic, and SBI is working individually with award winners to present or deliver awards.
